Tredozio probably owes its name to the name Castrum Treudacium. Its origins are very ancient: the first human settlements found in the locality of S. Maria in Castello date back to the Bronze Age or Villanovan age.
Inhabited also by the Romans who subjugated the Boi Gauls who were settled throughout the valley, it was a Byzantine dominion. In the 12th century, it became a fief of the Counts Guidi of Modigliana and played above all the role of ‘mercatale’ at the centre of a large mountain basin.
The Counts Guidi of Modigliana controlled the territory for a long time by fortifying a ‘Castellaccio’ to guard the village below. The Florentine Republic took possession in 1428 through an act of submission by the local community. Tredozio was popular as a health resort in past centuries, as evidenced by the numerous patrician palaces (600-700) overlooking the main street of the historic centre.
Only in 1923 did Tredozio, like other former Tuscan municipalities, become part of the Province of Forlì (today Forlì-Cesena).
The castle (Castrum Treudacium), dating back to the 10th century, must have had a rather imposing appearance as it was built with solid lime and stone walls.
Octagonal in shape, at the central point was the 17-metre high tower around the weapons and ammunition depot, next to it the Church of St Mary Magdalene and then the Count’s House.
Unfortunately, all that remains of the old castle are the foundations and some underground rooms, perhaps used as cisterns for collecting water or as cellars, and the remains of the tower and other ruins.
Palazzo Fantini, a rural factory and manor house, is the most prestigious palace in Tredozio. Built before 1500, it was reborn in 1750, when Lorenzo Maria Fantini decided to provide a suitable home for his family, who owned 33 farms covering 1,000 hectares of land. The complex overlooks two courtyards and then flows into a splendid Italian-style garden.
The Parish Church of San Michele (12th century) with Crucifix painted on wood by the Riminese School (14th century) was originally built on a single nave, only in 1795 were the two side aisles added.
The Church of the Company and Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Graces built in the 14th century preserves the image of the Blessed Virgin of Graces inside.
Today Tredozio is a small community rich in small entrepreneurs and craftsmen, both in ancient and traditional trades and in the footwear sector, a local peculiarity.
The Tredozio shoemaking workshops produce riding boots in particular, which for their functionality and practicality have won the favour of riders from numerous countries (European and non-European) as well as several Olympic teams for equestrian sports.
The town is also a pleasant summer resort.
