Forlì, in the heart of Romagna, is the place where culture, leisure, food and wine, nature and hospitality create a unique mix for an authentic and unforgettable experience.
Founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BC with the name of Forum Livii, the town, located along the Via Emilia, lies a few kilometers from the seaside area of the Adriatic Riviera and at the foot of the green hills of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines.
Since the most remote centuries the heart of the historic centre is the huge Piazza Saffi. Its porticoes create a great atmosphere in town, as if the town was a theatre and the porticoes the backstage that represents the flow of the centuries. Among the most prestigious monuments that characterize it is the Abbey of San Mercuriale, surmounted by the imposing bell tower. The center of the square is dominated by the statue of Aurelio Saffi, the great Forlì politician, a fraternal friend of Mazzini.
Forlì is also the town of Caterina Sforza: the Rocca di Ravaldino captures her memory.
Classical art is exhibited in the Civic Museum of San Domenico, with authentic masterpieces by Beato Angelico, Palmezzano, Fattori and Canova, including the superb statue of Hebe, as well as the Caravaggio painting “Fiasca con i fiori” (Jug with flowers).
Twentieth-century art is housed in the Civic Museum of Palazzo Romagnoli, home to the Verzocchi Collection, a collection of over seventy paintings focused on the work of great masters such as Depero, De Chirico, Guttuso, Casorati. (Palazzo Romagnoli is currently closed due to refurbishment.)
A few kilometres from Forlì, in San Varano, you will find Villa Saffi, immersed in a green park. Today it is a house-museum, in the past it was Aurelio’s home.
Forlì is also the “City of the ‘900”: in front of the train station you will find the long Viale della Stazione, or Viale della Libertà, recently identified as the “Miglio Bianco” (White Mile), a scenic monumental path with several architectures of the early twentieth century, including the rationalism of the imposing former Aeronautical College, designed by the Roman architect Cesare Valle, the Monument to the Fallen of Piazzale della Vittoria, designed by the Roman architect Cesare Bazzani.
