Ancient monastery dating back to around 1060. Probably founded in 1060. In 1563, 14 Dominican nuns from the convent of the “Africa Place” moved here. In 1810 Napoleon abolished the monastic orders and the Dominican nuns had to leave the convent, which, deprived of any activity, was put up for sale and bought by the Fabroni family, originally from Marradi.
In 1986 the Fabroni family sold the convent to the Municipality of Tredozio. The large religious building is located at the beginning of the village on the left side of the Tramazzo river (for those coming from Faenza). It is currently being restored for tourist-cultural use. The building is characterized by its wide dimensions and by the horseshoe shape of the structure facing the mountain and the courtyard.
It has three floors above ground, with a total of about 100 rooms. On the ground floor are the guest rooms, the courtyard, the church, the refectory, the cellars and other service areas. On the first and second floors are the cells and the cloister services.
The convent of SS. Annunziata is related to the life of Silvestro Lega, the great Macchiaiolo artist, born in Modigliana in 1826. The painter found a safe haven here at various times in his life, thanks to the relationship that bound him to the Fabbroni family, the owners of the monastery at the time.
Evidence of this can be seen in the paintings and drawings that depict views and perspectives of the monastery and the surrounding countryside: the works “Women carrying silk to market” and “Landscape of Romagna” are the most undeniable proof of Silvestro Lega’s artistic connection with these lands.
The convent is currently being restored.
