Post Office Building

Cesare Bazzani, responsible for designing the new headquarters of the R.R. Poste e Telegrafi, proposed locating the building in Piazza Saffi, on the site of the Pantoli, Rolli and Landini buildings, which were ruthlessly demolished in the name of urban decency. After several studies, it was decided to place the new building further back from the row of demolished buildings, in order to give greater prominence to San Mercuriale church and Palazzo Paulucci-De Calboli, thus changing the perspective of this part of the square. Built in 1931-32 on a rectangular plan, with an interior courtyard that allows With a rectangular plan, with an internal courtyard that allows the lighting of the large semicircular hall for the public, the building is proposed towards the square in a courtly manner: double order with a round arch, where the ground floor, raised by about one meter, offers the shelter of a deep portico, the fourth in the square. The sharp contrast between the travertine and the textures of the rounded terracotta, a tribute to the chromaticism of Forlì’s architecture, however, is not enough to remove from this architecture the sense of a new proposed neo-Cinquecentism based on the repetition of a few oversized elements. The large island in front of the building was to be characterized not only by the two large flagpoles that still exist today, but also by a fountain with an ellipsoidal plan, which instead adorned the square in front of the station.

How to get there:
The Palazzo is located on one side of Piazza Saffi and can be reached by bus (lines 1,2,3,4) and by car (there are paid car parks nearby in Piazza XX Settembre and Piazza del Carmine).
