The Museum of the Fortress is located on the ground floor of Castrocaro Fortress. There are five sections in the permanent exhibition, in which some relics are displayed that describe the different periods through which the town has passed (Etruscan, Roman, Byzantine and Longobard, up to the the Middle Ages and the Renaissance) in a chronological sequence: Ancient times, the time of the Eagle, the Keys in the banner, under the sign of the Lily, under the sign of the Medici.

Paintings, jewellery and majolica, weapons, drawings, flints, coins, medals, writings and parchments: the rooms of this ancient palace recount the history of the town.

Thanks to numerous, largely unpublished manuscript documents found in the Vatican Secret Archives and other important Italian archives, it has been possible to reconstruct the millenary social, political, military and artistic events that involved the Fortress of Castrocaro and its territory, especially those of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The Castle and Town History Museum is located on the ground floor of the 13th-century Palazzo del Castellano (the ancient ‘Domus of the feudal lords of Castrocaro’), located inside the medieval Fortress.

On display are even the interesting medieval, discovered by Pro Loco volunteers during tthe Fortress restoration, which testify the presence of educated and sophisticated people within the walls of the rude mediaeval manor.
