The walk of St. Anthony

2020 was the birth year of the Long Walk of St. Anthony and is addressed to those who wish to make an authentic Christian pilgrimage.

The privileged starting point is the Antonian Sanctuaries of Camposampiero (Padua) where the miracle of the Vision took place.

An alternative departure is also possible from the Basilica of Santa

Maria della Salute in Venice where the most famous relic of the Saint outside Padua is kept, and both starting points converge at the Basilica of St Anthony.

The Walk of St. Anthony comprises 23 stages leading from the Antonian sanctuaries of Camposampiero (Padua) to the Sanctuary of La Verna (Arezzo) for a total of 450 km.

The connections have been made by choosing the most naturalistic routes possible.

The walk is active from May to October each year and is almost entirely signposted, however, the signposting varies from area to area.

All the signs, however, contain the inscription ‘Il Cammino di S.Antonio’.

Once at the place of departure, it is necessary to request the credential, a travel document that guarantees the authenticity of the pilgrimage and serves to certify your identity, condition and intentions (your status as a pilgrim).

The credential does not give you any rights, but it does allow you to access affiliated reception facilities and can be picked up the day before departure at the Information Office of the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua or at the gatehouse of the Antonian Sanctuaries in Camposampiero.

When you arrive at the Antonian Sanctuary of Montepaolo or the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna, you go to the friars, have the last stamp placed on the credential and request the Assidua: a certificate that certifies that the pilgrimage has taken place and that is personalised by adding the pilgrim’s name.

To certify the authenticity of the document they place their signature of the rectors of the two Sanctuaries of Padua and Montepaolo/La Verna (point of departure and arrival).

To make the pilgrimage, the following are necessary:

– A minimum of previous physical training;

– A judicious choice of equipment;

– The prevention of certain situations that one may encounter;

– Adequate information on the ‘refuges’ of the walk and also on alternative accommodation options in the area.

It is recommended that you take the essentials with you; in addition, shops of all kinds can be found along the way to provide for various needs.

Recommended equipment:

– Lightweight backpack with a capacity of between 45 and 60 litres equipped with a cover backpack for rain

– Two poles

– Lightweight, low volume sleeping bag

– Hiking shoes and a pair of light sandals
