The tower pre-dated the town hall and was originally very tall, serving even as a lighthouse for sailors.
In 1599, its height was reduced by about half and a Baroque belfry was added.
In 1789, the wrought iron balcony and a niche for the terracotta statue of Virgin Mary of the Lake, Bertinoro’s patron saint, were built.
In 1816, a disciplinary cell was placed under the tower, which over time became a café and later the headquarters of the fire brigade.
In 1934 it was restored together with the façade of the town hall and the existing clock from the 17th century was replaced with the current one, also changing its location on the side of the tower.
The bells still marking time today bear the date of casting in 1516 and in relief the coat of arms of the township and the image of the Virgin Mary of the Lake..
