Described as the smallest volcano in Italy, it is actually an emanation of gaseous hydrocarbons that, in contact with oxygen, remain perpetually alight. The flames of the so-called ‘burning fountain’ create a special atmosphere.
In the middle of a field, you can see flames emerging from underground. The methane comes out in a different position to the natural one. In 1939, a gas pipeline was built from the natural outlet to the provincial road, where a small building in Littorio style, still visible today, was constructed.
The plant was inaugurated by Mussolini himself. After the war, the installation fell into disuse, but let out the gas in its current position. It is located at the top of a hill in the municipality of Tredozio, but dominating Portico.
How to get there: The volcano can be reached by car along the S.P. n. 22 del Monte Busca to Tredozio, for about 6 km and is located in loc. Inferno.
