Medieval in design, with a triangular shape, it dates from the 13th century and is located almost deliberately halfway between the two villages. Its sides are lined with porticoes with chiseled stone columns, which in the past were used to welcome the crowds that gathered for markets and fairs. The square is dominated by the 17th-century Civic Tower, which houses a ceramic clock and the enameled terracotta statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, whose heart is pierced by a sword and who seems to weep for the earthquake that struck the city in 1661. At the foot of the tower you can visit the old cobbler’s workshop “Sgalì” and admire the tools used by the “cobblers”.
How to get there: The square is located in the town centre. Access is from via Cairoli, via del Buggiuello and via Guerrazzi.
Additional information: The Beccatini Prize (opera concert) is held in this unique square every summer.
