The Gallery of Contemporary Art was founded in 1990 and named after Vero Stoppioni, founder of the Campigna Prize. Its collection documents the trends of contemporary art from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Of particular interest is a group of works by the celebrated artist Mattia Moreni, who died in 1999, including “Mistura” and the series of “Self-Portraits”, which belong to Moreni’s phase of “Regression of Species and Fine Arts”. Adjacent to the gallery is the Bidente Riverbed Sculpture Park, featuring works by national and international contemporary artists.
The Gallery of Contemporary Art “Vero Stoppioni” hosts every year the Campigna Prize – Festival of Contemporary Art. The permanent collection documents the various trends in contemporary art of the second half of the 20th century (works collected in the various editions of the Prize) and is complemented by temporary exhibitions. On display in the gallery is Mistura, a large-scale polymaterial work by the artist Mattia Moreni (1920-1999). The series of self-portraits by the same artist is part of the cycle “Regression of the Species and Fine Arts”.
Inextricably linked to the Gallery is the open-air Sculpture Park, whose installations by artists of national and international renown are placed at various points in the territory of St. Sophia. Among the artists present are M. Staccioli and by H. Nagasawa, A. and P. Poirier, G. Maraniello, F. Favelli, E. Mattiacci, N. Carrino, L. Mainolfi, A. Pomodoro, F. Somaini.
