Inaugurated in 1983, it is a kind of open-air science museum that displays the main plant environments of the Romagna Apennines on a small scale. A network of two kilometres of paths allows visitors to admire over 500 species of the flora of the Casentino Forest National Park.
The Garden covers about 2 hectares with an average altitude of 700 m above sea level. Realised by the Emilia-Romagna Region, in collaboration with the State Forestry Corps and the Province of Forlì-Cesena in 1983, it represents an open-air museum structure with didactic and protectionist aims.
It is mainly addressed to school groups, who can find, in the didactic structures provided, a valid instrument for learning about the Apennine natural environment. The morphological characteristics have made it possible to condense many of the vegetation and floristic aspects of the Apennine environment into a restricted area, through the restoration of pre-existing realities and the reconstruction of environments, with the planting of typical species.
There are also species of the Romagna flora that are threatened and protected by R.L. 2/77, included in the vegetation areas related to them.
Three thematic nature trails have recently been set up in the Valbonella Garden, covering woodland, wetlands and environments.
