The church is a jewel of Tuscan Renaissance architecture. It preserves precious paintings from the 16th and 18th centuries.
The Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli is located in Borgo di Pianetto, about 2 km from Galeata. The complex is nestled among the buildings of the small village and has a small square with a central fountain (built in the last decades of the 19th century), from which the path to the remains of the castle begins.
The building was erected at the request of the inhabitants of the village after a miraculous event that occurred in 1497 in Pianetto, in the house of Cione di Francesco, where a panel depicting the Madonna and Child among the saints was seen weeping and pouring from her breast thicker and whiter drops similar to milk (Letter of Pietro Delfino, General Camaldolese, 1497).
Following the miracle and the immediate devotion to the holy image, it was decided, by decree of the Camaldolese Sebastiano Fabbri, Abbot of San Ellero and Bishop of Melitene, to build the church and the adjoining Convent of the Minor Friars.
The façade, made of squared blocks of sandstone, was conservatively restored in 1994 together with the church. It is characterized by a large lunette portal surmounted by an oculus.
On the sandstone blocks of the façade there are engraved inscriptions commemorating special events related to the church.
