CASTROCARO TERME SPA INSTITUTE

Popular since Roman times, Castrocaro’s mineral waters, whose beneficial properties were rediscovered in the first half of the 19th century, have been used continuously ever since to promote health and wellbeing, using constantly improved techniques and treatments.

In 1838, the waters were initially used for therapeutic purposes by Dr. Corrado Taddei De Gravina, a Castrocaro physician and scholar. Then, popularity of the waters of Castrocaro in the medical-sanitary field spread rapidly, so much so that in 1844, a first small spa was built.

At the beginning of the 20th century, thorough studies and research – carried out in collaboration with the Universities of Pisa, Bologna, Ferrara and the Institute of Geosciences and Georesources in Pisa – allowed the discovery of new sulfurous water wells – and began making naturally healing mud, known as ‘velvet mud’ for its palpable creaminess.

Impressive renovations led to the grand opening of the ‘Stabilimento Termale Demaniale’ in 1938, later enlarged throughout the 1970s and 1990s with new facilities offering traditional thermal cures and centers for treating rhinogenous deafness and peripheral vascular diseases, as well as motor rehabilitation Inside the complex there is a thermal treatment center, a thermal spa, a specialist outpatient clinic, a rehabilitation center and the ‘Long Life Clinic’.

FESTIVAL PAVILION

The Festival Pavilion ranks among the three buildings of the Castrocaro Terme spa complex and is distinguished by its elegance and refinement, distinguished by its elegance and refinement, clearly outstanding among Italian rationalist architecture of the 1920s.

Inaugurated in 1938, it was designed by architect Diego Corsari, and adorned with Tito Chini’s splendid metal glazed ceramic decorations, produced in the Tuscan manufactories of Borgo San Lorenzo. With a basilica plan, it consists of two floors with an exterior facade in brickwork, and its volumes outlined by white travertine and black marble mouldings. The characteristic façade, formed by a semicircular central body, covered in travertine with large openings. The façade is composed of a semicircular central body, clad in travertine with large openings on two floors, and two lateral bodies, clad in white travertine and black marble.

A pair of elegant green marble fountains  complete the decoration, with the inscription ‘PADIGLIONE’ at the top, at whose sides are two large metopes representing Maternity. An airy and scenic semicircular atrium is located inside the building. The floor is made of marble, with a large and beautiful circular mosaic of polychrome majolica tiles in the center. The hall is surmounted by a beautiful circular skylight with three concentric bands embellished with symbols of the constellations, the zodiac and the stars.

For fifty years, the ‘Festival delle Voci Nuove’ song contest has been held on the stage of the Pavilion.
