Montepaolo is the place where St. Anthony of Padua stayed for more than a year (1121/1122) in the small Franciscan monastery.
The Saint’s hermitage stood in a different landscape to the one we see today, which has been completely destroyed by landslides over the centuries.
The friars’ dwelling was located on the high ground just a few hundred metres south of today’s Sanctuary, the ‘Grotto’ lower down, on the west side, a few hundred metres further down the slope to the east of the Samoggia River.
