The printing of fabrics is a typical production of Romagna, according to the most ancient tradition.
Printed Romagnola cloths had a considerable diffusion until the beginning of the 900’s.
Then they were forgotten and rediscovered. The commitment and passion of the printers has been crucial to the success of the activity, which associates the printed canvas with the image of the Romagna tradition.
The traditional method of hand printing is defended by the Stampatori Tele Romagnole (Printers Association of Romagna) from industrial imitations and spreads the culture that underlies the tradition Romagna canvases themselves with its original characteristics.
A large fair has always been held in Santa Sofia on Easter Monday, with exhibitors all over the town centre. Today it is basically a large market with stalls of various kinds, but originally, the Easter Monday Fair was an important farmers’ market, dedicated above all to livestock.
Since 2018, an attempt has been made to enhance the fair by bringing it back to tradition.
The livestock farmer’s market, in Santa Sofia, was closely linked to the Easter period: on Holy Thursday, during the weekly market, the farmers used to bring the most beautiful and powerful oxen to the market, festively decorated with ornate vestments: it was the ‘Easter Ox’ parade. Then, after the Easter celebrations, there was the Easter Monday fair, which drew all the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside to the village for a time of feasting and entertainment.
Today, in addition to the market in the central streets of Santa Sofia, there is an area dedicated to the agricultural and farming world. There are typical products and handicrafts, as well as the possibility of tasting typical products selected by Slow Food. Also on the programme are exhibitions of period pictures, entertainment and a concert of popular music.
