The Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona, Campigna National Park

The Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona, Campigna National Park covers an area of about 36,000 hectares, divided equally between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, including areas in the provinces of Forlì-Cesena, Arezzo and Florence. It stretches along the Tuscan-Romagna Apennine ridge, descending steeply along parallel valleys and more gradually on the Tuscan side, which has gentler slopes, to the wide valley bottom of the Arno river. The Romagna side includes the areas of the towns of Bagno di Romagna, Santa Sofia, Premilcuore, Portico-San Benedetto and Tredozio. The Tuscan side includes the Casentino municipalities of Poppi, Bibbiena, Chiusi della Verna, Pratovecchio-Stia and the Mugello municipalities of San Godenzo and Londa.

The beech forests of the National Park and the Riserva Integrale di Sasso Fratino were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.  As you know, access to Sasso Fratino is forbidden, while the surrounding area, which also includes stretches of vetustic forest of considerable value and extent, also recognised by UNESCO, is accessible via the National Park’s network of paths.

The Park can be explored on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or, in winter, on cross-country skis or snowshoes, along the 600 kilometres of paths. In addition to the more demanding trekking routes, there are also 9 nature trails in the Park area, short itineraries in easily accessible areas, whose main characteristic is that they are designed to show the peculiarities encountered along the way, which could easily escape the attention of less attentive or untrained visitors. Campigna also has a “path for all the senses”, which is open to everyone.
