Characteristic presences in the natural environment of Predappio are the places that in the past were linked to sulfur mining. In the vicinity of the town of Predappio Alta, the caves of the zolfasulfur mine, used in the past for sulfur mining, can still be found.
The caves were used in the past for the extraction of sulphur, the precious yellow mineral that was found here with a high degree of purity and remarkable quality.
Francesco Raineri, born in Villa Salto in 1645, was the first to discover the presence of sulphur in the present territory, but the first definite news about the mines date back to the early 1800s, when Romagna was under Napoleon’s rule.
The caves also consisted of many tunnels dug into the rock, mostly of a formation called “spungone”.
Characterized by the presence of sulfurous waters, stalactites and sedimentary rocks that contain numerous fossils, until a few years ago they were populated by an abundant colony of bats. Some of the caves have curious features that have given their names to the various sites.
First owned by the Manzoni family, the caves have been managed by various leaseholders.
Since 1981, at Christmas time, the caves have hosted a large sacred representation of Nativity: the Solfatara crib.
