In the mighty Medicean Arsenals within Castrocaro’s medieval fortress lies a singular building, unique in Italy for its typology.
One whole wall consists of a huge protrusion of sponge stone, crossed by an oblique layer of marine deposits: about 10 meters long and 80 centimeters high, consisting of millions of shells,dating back to the Pliocene period, stacked and pressed on top of each other.
Opening times: Annual.
Can be visited during normal opening hours of the Fortress: Saturday: 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. / Sunday and holidays: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. – 7 p.m
