An interesting cultural itinerary exploring the secrets behind Terra del Sole’s ancient fortress town.
Starting at the Spa entrance, walk along the tree-shaded Viale Marconi towards Terra del Sole. When the road ends, cross the street and turn right passing the public weighbridge, then left. Enter the ‘Porta Fiorentina’, turned towards Florence, formerly guarded by a drawbridge. Past the arches of the entrance gallery you come to the citadel of Terra del Sole, the Renaissance village founded by Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1564. The door is integrated into the “Captain’s Castle”. You then walk through the ‘Borgo Fiorentino’ until you reach the vast ‘Piazza d’Armi’ which is overlooked by the ‘Palazzo dei Commissari’, the ‘Palazzo dei Provveditori’ and the ‘Chiesa di S. Reparata’. Make your way along the ‘Borgo Romano’ until you reach the ‘Castello del Governatore’. The castle is incorporated into the “Porta Romana” overlooking the Romagna. On the way back, just outside the walls, turn right into Via della Biondina.
After approximately 1 km along the left side, there is evidence of the ancient Pieve di Santa Reparata. Proceed to the bridge located at the old furnace and then, following the Via delle Sorgenti, proceed back to the village.
