The gate of San Francesco is one of the three ancient access points to the medieval town of Bertinoro and is incorporated in a tower built with terracotta bricks alternating with stone ashlars.
Currently part of a house, it was once a guardhouse for soldiers at the entrance to the city. In its archway is still embedded one of the iron hooks, part of the metal hinge that supported a wooden door leaf closed every night to protect the inhabitants.
