Paleolithic deposit of an age in the order of 800-900 thousand years ago. It is therefore one of the oldest known records of human presence on the European continent.
In 1983, during the development of a research programme concerning the distribution of
Paleolithic industries in the foothill areas of Romagna, was discovered one of the
most important prehistoric deposits in Europe.
The site is located in Cà Belvedere, at about 200 meters above sea level, at the top of Monte Poggiolo (a dome-shaped relief between Forlì and Terra del Sole, at the end of the watershed between the river Montone and Rio Petrignone) not far from the Medici castle located on top of the hill.
The excavation revealed a five-meter thick gravelly-sandy series meters thick, resting on blue clays of marine origin, which contains, in their original position, flints chipped by man in the Lower Palaeolithic period.
The discovery made Monte Poggiolo famous among universities and archaeologists all over the world, to the point that the 13th World Conference for the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences was held in Forlì in 1996.
Location: Monte Poggiolo
How to get there: 3 km from Terra del Sole.
Additional information: The excavation and research at the site of Cà Belvedere di Monte Poggiolo are the result of the close collaboration between the Provincial Administration of Forlì-Cesena and the University of Ferrara.
