Walls and towers, built in local stone, standing on the living rock of the hill.
First mentioned in a document in 976 and later in 1037 as the property belonging to the powerful Convent of San Giovanni Evangelista in Ravenna, the construction of Polenta Castle should date back to the 10th century. Back then, all villages in the Romagna region that held a prominent position were fortified by building walls and a fortress, becoming the seat of the local lord. However, there is no certain information on the Da Polenta family until the 12th century. Apparently a family of local peasants who first became milites, i.e. soldiers guarding the castle owned by the monastery in Ravenna.
