Palazzo Pretorio, located in the medieval square of the same name, centre of the old village, was first the palace of the Conti Guidi and from 1377 the seat of the Podestà sent from Florence.
Built of 14th-century Tuscan stone, it was once taller and equipped with battlements, but, following earthquake damage, was lowered to its current appearance. In the cross-vaulted atrium, which has been partially restored, it is possible to recognise the coats of arms of the Podestà who succeeded in governing the city.
The upper floors house the Silvestro Lega Municipal Art Gallery with works by Silvestro Lega, Annibale Gatti, Gino Barbieri, Baccio Mario Bacci, Armando Spadini, Edoardo Gordigiani, Luigi Servolini, Domenico Baccarini (from the donation of Michele Campana), works from the Silvestro Lega award (in particular by Getulio Alviani, Concetto Pozzati and Plinio Mesciulam) and by various authors who have also come to the City Council thanks to the generosity of the authors themselves, such as Francesco Nonni who is present with the painting ‘The Swimmers’. The top floor houses the historical archive with precious incunabula and cinquecentine.
