Aurelio, a fraternal friend of Giuseppe Mazzini, triumvir of the Roman Republic, loved to reside at Villa Saffi and it was here that he died on 10 April 1890. The building had been a Jesuit convent and became the property of the Saffi family in 1740, bought by Tommaso, Aurelio’s great-grandfather, who made it his holiday residence.
The Villa is part of the “House Museum of the Poets and Writers of Romagna” circuit and of the National Association “Houses of Memory” and preserves period furniture, books and memorabilia of extraordinary interest, including that of Mazzini, who was a guest there on several occasions.
The building, surrounded by a park of plane-trees, cypresses, magnolias and other ancient trees, was also the site of secret meetings of the Carbonari and, as such, referred to in coded language as the “Sale dell’Amaranto”.
