The Santarelli Kindergarten replaced the previous one, which was demolished because it did not meet the hygienic and functional requirements. In fact, education and social service facilities were a priority of the fascist regime, which had to promote an image of modernity and build consensus. To increase its visibility, the building was actually inaugurated twice: by Rachele Mussolini and a year later by Queen Elena. Designed by architect Guido Savini, the kindergarten was built between 1934 and 1937. The building is organized around a courtyard with an open side closed by a portico. The portico gives access to three different functional blocks: a massive cuboid volume containing the dining room and chapel; an L-shaped body containing the classrooms with access to the garden, facing south to receive most of the sunlight; and finally a long body with a semicircular end and a roof terrace containing the recreation room.
How to get there:
From Piazza Saffi take Corso Diaz and turn left in Via Bella. At the end turn left in Via Caterina Sforza. The kindergarten is at the end of the street.
