Designed for an expected attendance of 1,000 students, the building occupies a large block, with ample garden space for use as an outdoor gymnasium. It has a large quadrangular plan. The fourth side, parallel to the avenue and opposite the entrance, is a kind of large stone greenhouse for indoor recreation. The building now houses the Edmondo De Amicis Elementary School. Engineer Arnaldo Fuzzi developed a striking design, using local materials and functional floor plans with well-distributed spaces. The warm yellow-pink hue of the fired bricks from the local Hoffmann kilns matches the high concrete basement. Decorative framed window arches run the length of the building’s perimeter and are characterized by alternating knife-edged brick and concrete bands, simulating medieval ornamental motifs. The three-light mullioned windows, placed at the most prominent points of the entire building, are interrupted by concrete columns topped by small water-leaf capitals. The entire school area is surrounded by a typical self-sufficient fence.
How to get There:
The building is located about halfway along Viale della Libertà, which connects Piazzale della Vittoria to the railway station, in front of the State Industrial Technical Institute.
