This is the ancient parish church of Santo Stefano in Juviniano, of which only the crypt remains. Cited as early as 892, dedicated to St Stephen Pope and Martyr, it was profoundly remodeled in the 15th century. The new 15th-century building was consecrated by Pope Julius II on the occasion of his passage through Modigliana (1506). Further works were carried out in 1756 and the building was further enlarged.
The interior was built in Baroque style with three naves, divided by large pillars, within which niches for devotional statues were created. In 1859, when the diocese of Modigliana was established, the parish church became the bishop’s seat and the town’s cathedral. As an epigraph at the base indicates, the bell tower was erected in 1764. Among the statues, paintings and decorations of considerable value, worthy of mention are an oil on canvas depicting St. Stephen offering the town with St. Prudenziana (by Paolo Cignani) and an oil on panel depicting ‘The Annunciation’ by Francesco delle Querce and a ‘Pentecost’ by an anonymous author of the 17th century Tuscan school.
