Capuchin convent

It was founded in 1561 by Fathers Lorenzo Visani from Fognano and Bernardino Piazza from Modigliana on the site known as Monte Castellaro. The convent was enlarged several times until it took its current form at the end of the 18th century. It now houses the Accademia degli Incamminati, which promoted its restoration. Under the portico of the church there were tombstones of important personalities of the town, including those of brothers Giovanni and Matteo Zauli, who in 1823 had built in Modigliana the first steam spinning mill (with advanced technology) of Romagna and Tuscany.

Inside, there are various wooden altars in the pure Capuchin style. On the high altar there is a painting by Mastelletto and on the side altar a painting by Carlo Cignani.

Behind the painting on the first altar to the right, a large reliquary with busts of saints carved in wood, in colour, probably of South Tyrolean manufacture. Next to the church steps there is a devotional grotto with a group of life-size statues depicting the Passion.

The former Capuchin Convent was purchased by the Academy in 1971. Its current appearance dates back to the restoration of 1624, and the Superintendence of Monuments of Ravenna has listed it as an asset of historical-artistic interest. It is in need of further restoration and renovation work.

The book heritage, objects and paintings of historical-artistic value have been transferred and, also for their safe storage, are kept (in agreement with the civic administration) in the Library and in the Museum, which are open to the public.
