Also known as ‘Castello’ (Castle), it has the charm of the medieval urban structure, with the right structure of an ancient fortified village, defended by the Rocca’s towers and its overhangs that plunge into the green waters of the Bidente river. The historic core is crossed by the ancient road, still cobbled, between two gates (the southern one, known as ‘La Portaccia’, still bears the coat of arms of the Counts Guidi di Bagno).
The fortress, restored over time, belonged to the Abbey of S. Ellero and then to the Malatesta family of Gaggiolo, until it was remodelled and tampered with in the 18th century by the Counts Guidi, who demolished the western area to erect the church of S. Bonifacio and the residential palace with hanging garden.
How to get there: Immediately after the village of Meldola, the provincial road n. 4 del Bidente goes up to Cusercoli.
