The Albana Bell arrived in Bertinoro on 3 September 1989, from two years of intense work by the artist Guerrino Bardeggia. In 1987, he was commissioned by Bertinoro Municipality and the Romagna Wine Tribune to make a bell celebrating Albana and the wine tradition for Romagna, proud of Albana , as Italy’s first white wine, having received D.O.C.G. recognition in that year.

The Albana Bell was originally placed in the Clock Tower,Tower, next to the Town Hall, to mark out the hours of each day. However, the public was not allowed to admire the high reliefs that adorn it. In 1994, a suitable structure was created and the Albana Bell was finally placed on Romagna’s Balcony where it can be rung by everyone to remind all Romagna of its wine-making tradition. Once a year, however, its tolling becomes for Bertinoro the announcement of the beginning of the grape harvest.

Albana is also associated with a beautiful legend on the origin of the name ‘Bertinoro’.

Around 424 A.D, when Galla Placidia, emperor Constantius III widow and known throughout the world for the Mausoleum in Ravenna, obtained the reign of the western Roman Empire on behalf of her 6-year-old son Valentinian III.

At that time Ravenna was the capital of the Empire and Bertinoro was under the direct rule of the great emperors. The inhabitants relate that the Empress Galla Placidia, wishing to know the territories she owned, came to visit the town of Bertinoro. It was a hot summer day, it was necessary to stop for refreshment. Her convoy stopped near a farmhouse and his entourage immediately rushed to ask for a drink. It was a simple dwelling and the villager introduced himself with a simple clay pot, into which he poured Albana wine. Gallia Placidia was delighted by the scent and taste of this wine and thus proclaimed the prophetic phrase that would earn the country its name: ‘Oh Albana, you are worthy of drinking in gold! (Berti-in-oro)!».
