In the center of the apse of the Church of Saints Nicholas and Francis, stands Madonna in trono col Bambino tra S. Agostino e S. Antonio da Padova (the Madonna Enthroned with Child between St. Augustine and St. Anthony of Padua), a painting in tempera on panel within an elegant frame painted in gold on a blue background. The work presents a valuable chromatic harmony, with a compositional layout of crystalline rationality.
The painting, of considerable artistic value, was painted in 1500 by Marco Palmezzano of Forlì, a pupil of the great Melozzo. This can be seen in the fact that a label was painted on the base of the throne, bearing the artist’s signature: ‘Marchus Palmizanus pictor foroliviensis faciebat’.
In 1892, the painting was sold to Count Giulio Battaglini of Rimini for 4,000 lire, but the same year it was confiscated due to government orders, and after the trial, it was relocated to the parish church of Castrocaro.
