Rupe dei Cozzi – Castrocaro Terme

Rupe dei Cozzi is located to the north of the built-up area of Castrocaro Terme.

The site is famous for the ‘Spungone’, a particular type of calcareous sandstone rock forming the hills of Romagna from Bertinoro to Castrocaro Terme, passing through the towns of  Meldola and Predappio, which 3 million years ago was a splendid reef. Composed of a rough mixture of marine shells held together by limestone cement, impacts upon both the geology of the area and local agricultural production.

The area is a unique natural heritage, with fascinating landscape views that preserve an important  biological variety and numerous thermal springs, an excellent territory for agricultural and  especially, wine production. In the proximity of Rupe dei Cozzi is the ‘Bolga’, a place where the salty water flows out and gathers in ponds, containing salsojodic water, which, by underground pipelines, is conveyed to the thermal establishments.

Furthermore, there are mineral water springs in the area that bubble to the surface due to methane and hydrogen sulfide gas.
