Forlì, in the heart of Romagna, is the place where culture, time enjoyment, food and wine, nature and hospitality create a unique mix for an authentic and unforgettable experience.
Founded by the Romans in the 2nd century B. C. with the name Forum Livii, the city, located along the Via Emilia, lies a few kilometres from the seaside resorts of the Adriatic Riviera and at the foot of the green hills of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines.
The beating heart of the historic centre since the earliest centuries is the immense Piazza Saffi.
What creates a sort of theatre of city life are its porticoed sides, like wings representing the flow of the centuries.
Among its most prestigious monuments is the Abbey of San Mercuriale, dominated by its majestic bell tower.
The centre of the square is dominated by the statue of Aurelio Saffi. Forlì is also the city of Caterina Sforza: the Rocca di Ravaldino immortalises her memory.
Classical art is on display in the Museo Civico di San Domenico, with authentic masterpieces by Beato Angelico, Palmezzano, Fattori and Canova, including the superb statue of Hebe, as well as the Caravaggio work Fiasca con fiori.
A few kilometres from Forlì, in San Varano, there is Villa Saffi, immersed in a green park, now the Museum House, the home of Aurelio, the great politician and brotherly friend of Mazzini.
Forlì is also the ‘City of the 20th century’: from the railway station, the long Viale della Stazione, or Viale della Libertà, recently identified as the ‘Miglio Bianco’ (White Mile), a scenic monumental route that recalls various architectures of the early 20th century.
It is a route that starts from the ecclectic railway station to meet first the rationalism of the imposing former Aeronautical College, designed by the Roman architect Cesare Valle, then the War Memorial in Piazzale della Vittoria, designed by the Roman architect Cesare Bazzani, to arrive at the Palazzine Bazzani and Benini located at the entrance to Corso della Repubblica, the access point to the historic centre.
